Inyo-Mono Association for the Handicapped
IMAH's Mission
It is the mission of the Inyo-Mono Association for the Handicapped to promote an independent and fulfilling lifestyle for each client with developmental disabilities.
IMAH’s Purpose
It is IMAH’s purpose to provide programs and services to help the developmentally disabled adults in their quest to move towards a plan of self-support.
IMAH’s Vision and Future Programs
IMAH’s vision is to serve developmentally disabled adults who not only live in Inyo and Mono Counties, but to provide services and programs to those special adults who live throughout the State of California. Those programs include:
A Respite Program serving all families of special needs adults in the State.
What is respite? Webster’s New World Dictionary defines respite as an
interval of temporary relief or rest, as from pain, work, duty, etc. Our respite
program would provide families with much needed relief from the stressful
duties of taking care of their developmentally disabled adults. One of our
families has not had a vacation for over 46 years!
Towards Independent Living Program would serve those special adults, aged
18 to 32, who want to attend a two-year college course that teaches
independent living skills. Upon graduation from this course, the adults
would be able to live on their own and work in their community. There is
one program of its kind in Taft which has a 3 year waiting list.
Gardening is therapeutic and educational. We are working to turn a small
outbuilding into a greenhouse and planting area with workbenches that are
handicapped accessible. Our local nursery is donating time and products to
help us turn all of our plantable space into gardening plots. The clients will
sell our produce and flowers at the local farmers market and in our Thrift
Store. Excess will be donated to our senior meal program.
